Patterning Quiz exemplars

HERE ARE EXAMPLES OF LEVEL 4 OR HIGHER WORK FROM THE Patterning TEST:

  1. HOW DOES YOUR WORK COMPARE?
  2. HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE YOUR WORK?

a. The student started at 5 and corrected listed the next 5 numbers in the sequence
b.  The student created a table of values and explained what she noticed.  She used the common difference (3) and then a bit of check and guess to arrive at the final answer.

b. The student created a table of values to show what happens when she takes out the constant from the term value.  She then created another table of values to show the relationship between the term # and the variable.  She created the explicit pattern rule by putting both pieces of information together.

The student used the explicit pattern rule she created in (B) to predict the 10th term.  She didn't need to extend the table of values or sequence.

The student created an extra column on his table of values to keep track of how many cubes were being used every time a term was built.  This allowed him to easily (and efficiently) see when 100 cubes were used.
